  2. Hi Tyson! I love your art style. Do you have any tips for aspiring artists like me on drawing anthropomorphic characters?

    1. I think it’s always better to first study and practice traditional drawing to prepare a reliable art foundation, then proceed to specific styles. If you are generally good at art, you can draw whatever you want with competency.

The fastest way, is to attend an art course. If that’s not possible, buy or borrow art related textbooks from your local libraries. There are many recommendation of good art textbooks online. Use them as a starting point.

You have to practice a lot, but you also need to keep an eye out to observe the example and your own execution. Practicing with your brain turned off is useless. Drawing the same stuff all the time without really knowing what’s going on is also, useless. An art course is helpful because a good teacher will point that out for you. Art is always 30% skill, 70% observation. Not observation of the world around you, but to see what you are drawing and envisioning what you are going to draw at a stroke to stroke basis. It’s awkward at the beginning, but it will become a second nature eventually. This is arguably the most important of all when it comes to art.

Lastly, be patient. If you are not a genius, you will have to practice art a long time (20 more years in my case, loosely 30 years, even) to see yourself becoming really capable.

  3. Hey!
I use Krita daily, and seeing Kiki on the start-up screen always brings a smile to my face. I just wanted to say that your work is an inspiration to me and my friends and we love what you do! 🙂

    1. Thank you! I’m glad you like Kiki’s splash picture! Can’t wait when you see the new Kiki splash for Krita 5.0! Have fun with Krita! 😀

  4. Hi Mr Tan,

I hope that you are well.

I love your artwork for KDE: Konqi & friends are always my KDE wallpaper. Thank you for your contributions!

So I wondered if you have heard about the KDE Plasma 25th anniversary wallpaper contest? You can find the competition rules here: https://community.kde.org/KDE_Visual_Design_Group/Plasma_25th_Anniversary_Edition_Wallpaper_Competition . I hope that you will find time to enter — and win! — the competition. The deadline is 23 August, so you still have more than one month.

If you are too busy with other things, then just continue to enjoy your life!
