Spirit Animals in Disguise Key Concept Arts

This post showcases the concept arts of my original project “Spirit Animals in Disguise“. The picture above is the key concept art. The 3 main girls are running in front of some shop windows, the glasses reflect their “real forms” (although it would not happen in actual situations).

This project focuses on how spirit animals disguise themselves in human society and go about their everyday life. I intend to use a more “realistic” approach to present the traditional Chinese “Yaoguai” (mythical monsters?) genre. I want to strictly limit the powers of the spirit animals, and pay more attention to how they use their powers in everyday life instead of battle. Every spirit animal has a human form, an anthro form, and an animal form.

Leiting the Spirit Loong’s 3 Forms. She was originally a human girl, but was turned into a spirit loong by accident. She is one of the 3 main girls. The viewers are looking into the world of spirit animals through Leiting’s eyes.

Qiuye the Spirit Dhole’s 3 Forms. She is one of the 3 main girls.

Mingzhu the Spirit Shark’s 3 Forms. She is one of the 3 main girls.

These 3 girls are classmates. They live in Dongguan, Guangdong province, China — my hometown. The fictional Dongguan will be shaped based on the real city, but not a 1:1 clone. I will take my liberty to reshape it for creative purpose.

Most famous figures from traditional Chinese folklore will not be treated as “real”, but as “culturally constructed symbols”. However, their historical prototype will be presented as real, and their story will be presented in a realistic way.

Spirit Animals in Disguise shares its universe with Electric Hearts. The protagonist of Electric Hearts — Alice Rosetta — is Leiting’s classmate in Sunset Era.
