Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games Mascots

This is a fan art of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games mascots. I redesigned them using my personal art style.

I was very keen on drawing all sorts of mascots at the time, perhaps I was encouraged by the well-received 2008 Olympic Games mascots redesign attempt. However, when I was reviewing the mascots I drew in this time period, I thought most of them looked questionable, so I removed them from my gallery. The Vancouver one was kept because the winter outfit look appropriate.

Among the 4 characters in this picture, I think my redesign of Miga the Sea Bear (the black hair one) stood out. By giving her white costume and an art style in between anime and cartoon, I transformed her into something of her own, and I still think she looks quite nice.

If I remembered correctly, the redesign of Miga was the moment when I realized a character doesn’t have to be insanely colorful to look good. This experiment might have inspired me to change Alice Rosetta‘s hair color to black, and also insisted on giving all my Chinese characters black hair. This was a very important aesthetic change for me. I guess sometimes effort paid off in the most unexpected way.
