Kiki the Cyber Squirrel is the mascot I designed for Krita, a free and open source digital painting application. This is the splash art I created for Krita 2.9.
I used an abstract background in the previous splash, so this time I wanted to draw a more detailed scenery as background. I also thought the previous Kiki looked too generic and does not reflect her Cyber Squirrel namesake, so I added some robotic details in her bud ears’ connections with her head, her hair, and her sleeves.
I was in a low period as an artist at the time. The mental stress of self-doubt had negative impact on my creative endeavor. Although I painstakingly drew so many details in this picture, everything looks off and stiff, including the character. I would struggle in this low period all the way to 2022 to finally rebound.
