Kiki’s Running Cycles

Kiki the Cyber Squirrel is the mascot I designed for Krita, a free and open source digital painting application. This is the splash art I created for Krita 3.0. Krita 3.0 introduced animation tools, so I decided to reflect the feature in the splash art.

I was in a low period as an artist at the time. I realized my self-taught art skill had hit a bottleneck, so I began learning the basics. I refrained from using details and effects, but instead used a very primitive coloring approach to expose my shortcomings in color composition.

Plagued by self-doubt and confusion, plus the lack of art foundation at the time, I don’t think the picture looks very good now. But I still managed to I put together a convincing enough running cycle in this splash.
