Bailian (fullname: Guan Bailian / 关白莲) is a spirit mouse from Beijing. Her human identity is a volunteer doctor working for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (Red Cross). People usually call her Doctor Guan.
Origin
Bailian was originally a lab mouse (Kunming mice) (scientific name: Mus musculus, conservation status: Least Concerned) at a university-affiliated hospital. After realizing she was a spirit animal, she escaped but chose to practice medicine to fulfill her destined duties. Inspired by Guanyin (Chinese: 南海观音, Buddhism: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, the Mercy Listener), she adopted the surname “Guan” (Chinese: 关, the same pronunciation but a more common surname) to reflect her commitment to helping those in distress. Her first name, “Bailian” (Chinese: 白莲, white lotus), was inspired by Guanyin’s lotus throne.
Personality
Bailian is a calm and optimistic woman with strong willpower. Her smile and positivity provide reassurance to others. While working in an idealistic cause, she understands the meaning and limitations of her work, allowing her to adapt her strategies flexibly in complex situations to help as many people as possible.
Bailian’s appearance and demeanor often remind people of Guanyin. She sometimes speaks as if she were Guanyin herself but dismisses it as “just a joke.”
Specialties
Bailian is a renowned pediatrician with over a decade of experience in humanitarian aid. She excels at diagnosing illnesses, performing complex surgeries, and holds a veterinary license for treating spirit animals.
Bailian has exceptional spirit power sensitivity and spell-casting skills, enabling her to diagnose and treat patients as well as detect danger. In war-torn areas, she has often led her team to safety using these abilities.
Bailian often uses spirit power to treat her patients. To conserve her power, her anthro form has a small frame, which also fits the general impression of a mouse. She also has a child version of her human form as “Doctor Guan’s niece,” known as “Little Guan.” This child form consumes less power and allows her to quickly slip away from the crowd when her spirit power is low.
Life
Bailian is currently a volunteer for the Red Cross. She guides Alice in humanitarian aid activities in disaster-stricken, war-torn, and underdeveloped areas during Alice’s winter and summer vacations as part of a collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme and at the request of a close friend.
She is also a member of the World Spirit Animal Alliance, providing free medical service for spirit animals in areas in need of humanitarian aid and local spirit animals during her travels.
Every year when lotus flowers bloom, Bailian returns to Dongguan for rest and recuperation. During her stay, she often helps at the local community clinic or serves as an expert at major hospitals, discussing treatment plans for challenging cases.
Relationships
Bailian has worked with international organizations like Médecins Sans Frontières, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the World Health Organization, the World Spirit Animal Alliance and has a wide network of contacts.
Previously a doctor at People’s Hospital of Dongguan, Bailian treated Leiting, Chunyu and many if their classmates.
Bailian was the main coordinator of the spirit animal association in Guancheng before Tonyn took over. With her help, Libbie, Zoey, and Tonyn were able to establish themselves in Dongguan smoothly. They affectionately call her “Lianjie” (Chinese: 莲姐, Big sister Lian) and treat her like their big sister.
