Zoey (full name: Zhou Yi / 周易) is a spirit sable from northeast China. His human identity is an engineer at UN’s International Space Cooperation, working in Songshan Lake, Dongguan City, China. He is the lead engineer of Alice, Leiting’s robot classmate.

Origin

Zoey was originally a sable (scientific name: Martes zibellina princeps, conservation status: Least Concerned) from the Great Xing’an Mountains in northeast China. After becoming a spirit animal, he named himself after the ancient Chinese classic, the Book of Changes (Zhou Yi / 周易), seeking inspiration from its wisdom and insight into the universe’s secrets.

Personality

Zoey is a light-hearted man who likes fooling around. He takes a casual, laid-back approach to work and life. When necessary, he can be quite sly and flexible, using all means—including exploiting the weakness of his opponents—to achieve his goals.

Specialties

The theory, design, and mass production of spirit bracelets—common tools for nearly all spirit animals—are largely attributed to his efforts. Though considered a genius by many spirit animals, he often downplays his contributions.

Although Zoey has terrible drawing skill, he is actually quite good at visual story telling, using his laughable stick figure sketches to explain complex concepts.

Life

Zoey lives a disorganized lifestyle, working at Songshan Lake and living in a dormitory provided by his work. His home is messy all the time, and he often spends nights in his office, factory, laboratory, or even a mini-van.

Zoe drives a work-issued electric mini-van—it’s common, cheap model but stuffed with various tools, equipment and even hidden features. The van is basically as his mobile base. For short distances, Zoe also rides a flat tricycle.

Relationships

Zoey and Tonyn were middle school classmates with vastly different talents, interests, and personalities, yet they maintained a close friendship. Alice was born largely because of their joint efforts. The carefree Zoey often teases the over-serious Tonyn but relies on the latter for things he struggles with.

Zoey treats Alice like his daughter. Due to his busy work schedule and frequent business trips, he entrusts her care to Tonyn. However, when in Dongguan, he occasionally brings her new gadgets for testing (toys to play with) or takes her to factories to learn about how things (especially herself) are made. If Alice behaves well, he beams with pride and boasts, “My daughter did this and that.” As a parent who spoils his child, Zoey prioritizes Alice’s creativity but neglects her manners. Consequently, Alice often pushes boundaries with her mischievous behavior.

Alice occasionally sees Zoey and other spirit animals in their animal or anthro forms, but due to her “good young science advocate” persona, she insists that “supernatural phenomena do not exist.” She instead attributes these experiences to glitches in her visual system.

Zoey wants to remind Alice to approach problems rationally and believe in her observations, but Alice’s stubbornness makes it easier for the spirit animals to handle the situation when Alice sees their true identities. Zoey is conflicted between deceiving Alice for everyone’s safety and telling her the truth for her growth while jeopardizing everyone’s safety.

Alice’s pet rabbit Cloud is intensely hostile towards Zoey. He once transformed into his sable form to scare the rabbit off, but to his surprise, “playing human for too long has numbed his predator instinct.” Without using lethal moves, he just couldn’t win the fight. Now there is nothing he can do to this unruly rabbit.
